Strategy
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)
Tools that support or replace spoken communication.
What it is
Any tool — pictures, sign, speech-generating device, apps — that helps a person communicate.
When to use it
Any nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or unreliably speaking person. Introduce early.
When NOT to use it
Never withhold AAC to "encourage speech" — not supported by research.
Examples
A 3-year-old uses core-word icons for more, stop, help, mom.
Evidence
Strong. AAC does not delay speech; often supports it.
