Functional Communication Training (FCT)

Teach a communication response that replaces a distress behavior.

What it is

Identify function (escape, access, attention, sensory) and teach a communication method that meets the same need.

When to use it

When behaviors serve a communicative function and easier communication is missing.

When NOT to use it

Do not use FCT to eliminate self-regulating stimming.

Examples

Teach "break please" card instead of pushing worksheets away.

Evidence

Strong evidence base.
