Holidays bring travel, crowds, new foods, and broken routines all at once. A little preparation makes a big difference for children and adults alike.

Air Travel

  • TSA Cares is a free helpline for travelers with disabilities. Request help at least 72 hours before your flight at tsa.gov/contact-center/form/cares or by calling (855) 787-2227. A trained Passenger Support Specialist can help you through the screening checkpoint.
  • Many airports offer the free Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard, which quietly tells staff you may need extra help. Check whether your airport participates.
  • Preview the airport with photos or videos, including what security screening looks like.
  • Pack noise-reducing headphones, comfort items, and familiar snacks.
  • Bring your Medical Passport with key communication and medical information.

Road Trips

  • Show the route on a visual map with planned stops.
  • Schedule breaks before they're needed.
  • Keep a bag of preferred activities within reach.

Family Gatherings

  • Send relatives a short note ahead of time about what helps, such as no forced hugs and space when needed.
  • Arrive early, before it gets loud and crowded.
  • Pick a quiet room as an escape space and agree on a signal to use it.
  • Bring safe foods. Don't make trying new dishes a requirement.
  • For gifts, consider unwrapping one at a time or skipping wrapping altogether.
  • Protect sleep routines as much as possible.

For Autistic Adults

It's okay to set limits, leave early, or skip events. Plan recovery time afterward, since social stretches can contribute to burnout.
