Public Outings

Restaurants, parks, birthday parties, family events.

Educational suggestions only — not individualized medical or behavioral advice. Every autistic person is different. Use as a starting point, and involve a trusted professional when things feel beyond what you can support alone.

Possible reasons

  • Sensory unpredictability — new smells, sounds, textures.
  • Social demand load: eye contact, small talk, unfamiliar people.
  • No clear exit strategy — feels like being trapped.
  • Disrupted routine (missed nap, delayed lunch, changed clothes).

Questions to consider

  1. 1What specifically has gone hard in past outings?
  2. 2Is there a predictable time-of-day or trigger?
  3. 3What supports do we bring — headphones, fidgets, snacks, comfort items?
  4. 4Is there an agreed exit signal or 'we can leave' phrase?

What to try first

  • Pre-visit the location virtually (photos, map, video).
  • Write a simple 'social story' of what will happen and in what order.
  • Bring sensory tools: noise-reducing earbuds, sunglasses, fidget, snack.
  • Agree an exit signal before you go — and honor it, always.

Evidence-supported strategies

Social story

A short first-person walkthrough written before the event — familiar becomes safe.

Sensory go-bag

Pre-packed kit: ear defenders, sunglasses, chewable, snack, water, comfort item.

Timed outings

Start with 20 minutes and leave while it's still going well. Build up over months, not days.

When to seek professional help

  • Outings are consistently ending in meltdown or shutdown despite planning.
  • Anxiety about leaving the house is spreading to other activities.
  • OT can support sensory profiling; therapist can support anxiety.

When immediate medical attention is appropriate

  • Wandering / elopement in a busy area — see also the 'Running Away' page. Call emergency services if missing.
  • Any injury needing medical attention.

In the US: call or text 988 for mental health crisis. Call 911 for medical emergencies. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222. Outside the US, use your local emergency number.
