Visual Schedules

Pictures or icons showing what happens next, in order.

What it is

A sequence of visual cues (photos, icons, or written words) that shows the order of activities. Reduces uncertainty and supports transitions.

When to use it

Transitions between activities, new routines, high-anxiety parts of the day, unfamiliar settings.

When NOT to use it

Never as a compliance tool to force through distress. Not a substitute for connection.

Examples

Morning routine board with 6 icons: wake, bathroom, dress, breakfast, brush teeth, backpack.

Evidence

Strong. Endorsed by NPDC as an evidence-based practice for autism.
