Executive Function in Adulthood
Executive function (EF) refers to the mental processes that let us plan, start, switch, and finish tasks. Autistic adults show consistent EF differences on both laboratory tasks and daily-living measures (Demetriou et al., 2018).
The most affected areas
- Task initiation — knowing what to do is not the same as being able to start.
- Cognitive flexibility — switching plans mid-stream costs disproportionate energy.
- Working memory during social multitasking.
What research supports
- External structure beats internal willpower. Written checklists, visual timers, and body-doubling all show benefit (Pellicano et al., 2017).
- Reduce decisions, not tasks. Batch cooking, uniform wardrobes, and templated emails preserve EF for what matters.
- Rule out co-occurring ADHD. Stimulant medication, when appropriate, can significantly reduce EF load (Hours et al., 2022).
